wearing uniforms that look like those of soldiers. |

This reminds those of us in the rest of Asia that Cambodia
is in the middle of a war. |

เมื่อถูกเตือนใจเช่นนี้ ก็น่าที่จะเหลียวแลดูสถานการณ์ในกัมพูชาบ้างว่า ในขณะนี้เป็นอย่างไร |
With this reminder, it is natural to reflect on the current situation
in Cambodia. |

ผมเองไม่ได้ไปสังเกตการณ์ที่กัมพูชา
เพราะฉะนั้นจึงต้องอ่านเอาจากที่คนอื่นเขาได้ไปพบเห็นแล้วเขียนไว้
และจำขี้ปากเขามาเล่าอีกต่อหนึ่ง
| I have not been to Cambodia to observe things first hand,
so I have to read things written by people who have been there,
and remember their gossip to pass it on. |

เขาว่าสงครามในกัมพูชานั้นแตกต่างกับสงครามในเวียตนามในสาระสำคัญคือ
| People who have been to Cambodia say the war there differs
from the war in Vietnam in an important way:

ในรัฐบาลของนายผลลอนนอลนั้น มีความสามัคคี และมีประสานงานกันเหนียวแน่นดีกว่าในรัฐบาลเวียตนามใต้
| in General Lon Nol’s government there is a sense of unity and
coordination that is much stronger than that of the South Vietnamese
government.

รัฐบาลเวียตนามใต้นั้น มีการแตกเป็นก๊กเป็นเหล่า และมีการเล่นพรรคเล่นพวกกันอยู่มาก แต่ในรัฐบาลกัมพูชานั้นเป็นพวกเดียวกันล้วน ๆ
| The South Vietnamese government is divided into factions which play
favourites. However, the Cambodian government consists of a single,
unified group.

คนในรัฐบาลนี้เคยรับราชการกับสมเด็จพระสีหนุมาแล้วทั้งนั้น
| All of the members of this government also served in government
during the reign of King Sihanouk.
|
|
เรียกได้ว่ารวมกันติด เพราะได้เคยเจออะไรอย่างเดียวกันมาแล้วทุกคน
| We can claim confidently that they are unified, because they all
had similar experiences in the past.
|

เมื่อสมัยยังรับราชการกับสมเด็จพระสีหนุนั้น คนในรัฐบาลกัมพูชาปัจจุบันอาจเคยแก่งแย่งแข่งดีกันมาบ้าง

บางคนอาจเป็นมหาดเล็กสมเด็จพระราชชนนี บางคนเป็นสนิทของเจ้าจอมมณีแข บางคนอาจเป็นคนสาิทของ

| In the time of King Sihanouk’s leadership, the leaders of the
government might have engaged in rivalry with one another:
some might have been close to King Sihanouk, some might have
been attendants of the King's mother, some might have been
close to Princess Monique, some might have been close to Princess Buppha Devi, and so on.

ในระหว่างที่รับราชการอยู่ก็จะต้องมีเบี้ยวกันบ้าง หรืออย่างน้อยที่สุดก็จะต้องระแวงกัน หรือนั่งค้อนกันอยู่ห่าง ๆ
| While serving the King these ministers must have
sometimes betrayed one another or, at a minumum, they would
have been suspicious of one another, looking daggers at
each other from a distance.

เพราะสมเด็จพระสีหนุหมดอำนาจวาสนาไป ทุกคนรู้ว่าตนเป็นคนในรัฐบาลเดียวกัน

| But now there is no reason to be suspicious of one
another, because King Sihanouk does not hold any power.
Fortunes have changed. Now everyone knows that they are
in the same government, and they are focused on working
for the collective good.

| Although Cambodia has a parliament, the real governing
power lies in the hands of just three people:

Minister.

| That is what people say.

คนเขมรเขานับถือท่านเหมือนพี่ป้าอาว์ลุง จะมีใครเรียกท่านว่า ลุงนอล
หรือน้านอลบ้างหรือไม่ ผมก็ไม่ทราบ
| The Cambodian people respect him like an older brother
or uncle. I do not know if anyone calls him Uncle Nol.

ท่านเป็นบุตรชาวนา และขณะนี้อยู่บ้านเล็ก ๆ หลังหนึ่ง
ตรงข้างกับแหล่งสะลัมเมืองพนมเป็ญ ท่านชอบเล่นต้นไม้
ถ้ามีเวลาว่างเมื่อไรท่านก็พรวนดินรดน้ำต้นไม้ในสวนเล็ก ๆ

| He is the son of farmers, and currently lives in a small
house next to a slum in Phnom Penh. He enjoys gardening.
When he has spare time he shovels soil and waters plants
in the small garden in front of his house.

see the simple way that he lives, they believe him.

administration of civilian affairs.

| Why he has bestowed the title of "General" upon himself,
I do no know.

| The prince is a small man .... He leads the effort to
promote freedom for the populace. Although the nation is
in the midst of a war, people say that he has made
considerable, demonstrable progress with this project.

of which there are many – to the Cambodian state.

emerging in Phnom Penh about King Sihanouk's past:
for example, about a consort of his who runs a brothel.
Pedicab riders point out to passengers a gambling
den that the King used to own.

| My sources in Cambodia say that King Sihanouk
has gone quiet. Is he doing well? Is he in a bad way?
Is he dead? Nobody knows.

| On Thursday UPI published an account from a
Cambodian student who recently left Peking and
is now in Paris. The student said that King Sihanouk
is being held captive in Peking, like a prisoner.

send a message of sympathy to de Gaulle's family, even
though the King was very close friends with the family.
